Police department honors top unit

The police department's Unit of the Third Quarter Award went to District 5 Day Operations' Community Area of Responsibility 3B.

The Kalihi-based unit was supervised by Sgt. Samuel Rodriguez and includes officers Louise Akina, Justin Castro, Steve Favela, Michael Fujioka, Will Scott, Noel Tenney and Kevin Yamasaki.

Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue also honored Detective Chris Duque as Employee of the Third Quarter, and Detective Earl Koanui as 2001 City Employee of the Year and Law Enforcement/Security Coalition of Hawai'i's "Top Cop."


UH-Manoa names librarian

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa has named Diane Perushek as university librarian. Perushek comes from Northwestern University, where she was assistant university librarian for collection management. She has a strong background in research library administration, resource management, planning, digital technologies and Asia-Pacific studies.

The UH Manoa Library, housed in Hamilton and Sinclair Libraries, has the largest collection of information and research materials in the state.


Registration for voting due

Qualified Honolulu residents of City Council District 5 have until Thursday to register to vote in the special election scheduled for Jan. 26 to fill the seat vacated by Andy Mirikitani.

The district generally includes Manoa, Mo'ili'ili, McCully, Tantalus, Makiki, Pawa'a, Ala Moana and Kewalo.

Registration forms are available in telephone directories and at satellite city halls.

Applications must be postmarked on or before Dec. 27 to be accepted.


Work to affect Fort Weaver Road

The state Department of Transportation says one lane of Fort Weaver Road between Geiger Road and Laulaunui Street will be closed through Friday for road work. A northbound lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and southbound from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., except today.


Fire started from appliance

A fire at a beauty shop on King Street Sunday caused more than $20,000 in damage, firefighters said.

Firefighters were called to the Argio Total Beauty Salon at 1465 S. King St. at 3:20 p.m.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the fire was caused by an electrical appliance left on after closing.


Water supply suspends tours

The Board of Water Supply has suspended public tours of its facilities indefinitely for security reasons following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The tour closures include the Halawa Shaft and Waihe'e Tunnel as part of the heightened security procedures at board facilities and water sources. No reservations are being accepted.
