Nanakuli resident Neal Caporoz helped set up a display along Farrington Highway in Ma'ili in 1997 to remind people not to drink and drive. The display of wrecked cars is part of the Wai'anae community's annual campaign during the holidays.

Alcohol is the No. 1 drug problem among youth in America. More than 80 percent of Hawai'i's 12th-graders have used alcohol, and 55 percent have had enough to get drunk, studies show. The nonprofit Honolulu Association of Insurance Women sponsored an essay contest to help make students aware of the consequences of drinking and driving.

With the approach of New Year's Eve— normally one of the deadliest periods on the nation's roads — the winning essays are offered here in the hope that they will lead all drivers to think twice about drinking and driving.

(The essays have been edited for clarity and brevity.)
