Old coins make fashion statement

European coins: Going out of business but into style.
Celine, the French fashion house, has created the "Eurodyssey" line of accessories as a way of saying aloha to the currencies of 12 European countries.

On Jan. 1, 2002, 12 European currencies will become obsolete, replaced by the Euro. More than 300 million Europeans will be affected, in addition to countless tourists and business travelers.

Celine has created a handbag, belt and pouch in honor of the change. Each features the complete range of coins that are going out of circulation and thus becoming collectable. The coins are embedded in chocolate calf leather.

Currencies to be featured will be those of France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands and Portugal.

The accessories are available at both Celine stores on 'Oahu: at Ala Moana Center and at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
