UH's Willoughby makes another All-America team

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i outside hitter Kim Willoughby was named to the ASICS/Volleyball Magazine All-America first team.

Willoughby led the nation in kills (850) and kills per game (7.20).

She was the only sophomore on the seven-player first team.

Willoughby was also named to the AVCA All-America first team this month.

Hawai'i's season ended with a loss to UCLA in the West Regional semifinal.

Willoughby is currently playing for the Wahine basketball team.

Logan Tom of national champion Stanford was named Player of the Year.

Arizona's David Rubio was named Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to the final four.

Minnesota's Lindsey Berg, a Punahou graduate, was an honorable mention selection.

SURFING

• Big-wave contests may start: Two big-wave surfing contests are on alert for a possible start tomorrow.

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay, and the inaugural Tow-In World Cup at Pe'ahi, Maui, could run tomorrow if projected waves of 20 to 30 feet arrive.

The Eddie Aikau contest holds priority, and the two events will not run on the same day because many of the competitors are registered for both contests.

"Once we know that the wave height is going to be there, it's a 50-50 chance then that we will run," said George Downing, contest director for the Eddie Aikau meet. "We need to average 20 feet and above."

Because of the contest's high standards, the Eddie Aikau event has been completed only four times since its creation in 1986.

The Tow-In World Cup will feature two-man teams chasing waves with both a surfboard and jet ski.

The surfer is towed into waves by the jet ski, similar to the concept of water-skiing, except the surfer releases the tow rope once on the wave.
