An 86-year-old Kalihi man died early yesterday morning after being hit by a car in Kalihi on Friday.

Isao Nishikawa died at The Queen's Medical Center shortly after midnight, according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said Nishikawa was struck by a pickup truck on North King Street in Kalihi at about 7:15 a.m. Friday.

He was crossing with the light and was walking within the crosswalk, police said.

The driver of the truck, a 22-year-old Kalihi man, was not intoxicated at the time of the accident and was not speeding, police said. Although traffic was heavy, there were no weather conditions that led to a reduction in visibility.

The man was driving a 1986 Chevy Silverado 4 by 4, which was raised high above the road, police said.

Drivers of similar vehicles have reported difficulty seeing pedestrians.
