'Tiser Christmas Fund still has room to grow

As always, we at The Advertiser are grateful and touched by the generous response of our readers to our annual Christmas Fund. So far, it has raised more than $140,000 for our neighbors in need — far ahead of the total this time last year.

 •  How to help

Checks made payable to The Advertiser Christmas Fund should be mailed to Helping Hands Hawai'i, P.O. Box 17328, Honolulu, HI 96817.

That's incredibly heartening. Hawai'i residents were extremely generous to those affected by the terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon — so much so that local charities worried that local giving would be diminished. It didn't happen.

In fact, this is a tough year for many in Hawai'i, with a national and Japanese recession exacerbated by the events of Sept. 11. The needs for Hawai'i's needy have rarely been greater, and you rose to the challenge.

It's not too late to give to The Advertiser Christmas Fund. In fact, a check dated before the end of the year will be, as always, eligible for a tax deduction come April.

We hope our readers will continue to give until it feels good.
