Chaminade turns back Presbyterian

Jaborri Thomas scored 16 points and Albert Powell contributed 15, leading Chaminade to a 59-49 victory over Presbyterian College (Clinton, S.C.) yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Mike Donegan had 10 points and eight rebounds for Chaminade (6-4) while Rod Isom and Jeff Whittle had 12 points each for Presbyterian (7-4).

Presbyterian struggled from 3-point range, hitting just three of its 18 attempts. The team was also out rebounded by the Silverswords 35-22.

Chaminade converted 54 percent of its shots, while Presbyterian shot 35 percent.

The Silverswords play today again, taking on Coe College (Iowa) at 7:30 p.m. at McCabe Gym.


HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

• French commits to Oregon: Mililani High School senior Mele French has made a verbal commitment to play soccer for the University of Oregon next fall.

French, a first-team all-state selection last season, was offered a full scholarship by Oregon and also was being recruited by Hawai'i, Southern California, Loyola Marymount, California, Boise State, Gonzaga, Sacramento State and Idaho.

The first day she can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 6.

French is leading the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division in goals with 16.

• Correction: Mililani's girls (6-0-1) lead the OIA West with 19 championship points, and Pearl City has 12 points. In the boys standings, Mililani leads with 19 points, and Pearl City has 14 points. Other records and point totals were listed in a story yesterday. Also, 'Aiea's girls (5-0-1) have 16 points and still have a shot at tying for the OIA West title.
