11-year-old, driver critical after Kane'ohe accident

Advertiser Staff

Two people were critically injured and a third hospitalized when a car ingored a stop sign and slammed into a passenger van last night in Kane'ohe, police said.

One of the injured was an 11-year-old girl who was riding in the van.

Police said the 19-year-old male driver of a 1998 blue Dodge Neon was driving north-west on Makalani Street and ignored a stop sign about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Puohala Street.

The Neon broadsided a 1994 Dodge Caravan, which was traveling south on Puohala and was being driven by a 52-year-old man.

Both drivers and the 11-year-old girl were taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

The van driver was in critical condition today and the Neon driver was in fair. A hospital spokesperson would not comment on the current condition of the girl, however.

Police say speed may have been factor in the collision but are not sure if alcohol played a role.
