Achievers

Dexter V. Asuncion of 'Aiea, a student at Washington State University, was awarded the President's Award for exemplifying exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community.

Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawai'i, was the recipient of the American Liver Foundation's distinguished Government Leadership Award. The award is given to a government official who has initiated legislation, regulation or government programs to help those affected by liver disease.

The Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University announced Hawai'i's top-scoring students in the center's Talent Search 2001. These students in grades 5-8 scored at the 97th percentile or higher on school standardized tests and took additional exams considered above grade-level. The students were:

  • Fifth Grade, Verbal: David Jaress of Iolani School, first place; Robert Shimizu of Iolani School, second place.
  • Fifth Grade, Math: Aaron Fong of Iolani School, first; Shimizu, second.
  • Sixth Grade, Verbal: Eugene So of Punahou School, first; Charles Rixey of Trinity Christian School, second.
  • Sixth Grade, Math: So, first; Daniel Lum of Iolani School, second.
  • Seventh Grade, Verbal: Jonathan Chang of Kaimuki Middle, first; Timothy Bridges of Assets School, second.
  • Seventh Grade, Math: Nolan Chung of Iolani School, first; Li Li of Washington Intermediate, second.
  • Seventh Grade, Combined: Li, first; Chang, second (tie), and Chung, second (tie).
  • Eighth Grade, Verbal: Kimberly Reinhold of St. Joseph, first; Liane Hu of Iolani School, second (tie), and Christopher Pang of Iolani School, second (tie).
  • Eighth Grade, Math: Melanie Bomke of Iolani School, first; Kyle Ota of Iolani School, second.
  • Eighth Grade, Combined: Bomke, first; Reinhold, second.

Gentry Homes Ltd. awarded $500 scholarships to the following students: Lauren Masako Aoki, Tysen M.V. Causey and Luela Mamuad Ramos, all of Campbell High; Kelly Bokin, Ernafe Bautista Caliboso and Cassandra Denise Lyn Marzol, all of Waipahu High; Jadelyn Tolentino Baniqued, Margot Chieko Kimura and Vicki Midori Odo, all of Pearl City High. Gentry also contributed $1,000 to a scholarship endowment fund for Hale O Ulu school in 'Ewa Beach.

The Honolulu Chapter of Executive Women International awarded scholarships to the following students: Debbie Liu of St. Andrew's Priory, $3,500, as well as a $500 Lynette Tamaye Notebook Award; Lorinda Dalipe of Waipahu High, $2,000; Christine Hill of Moanalua High, $1,500; Eva Constantaras of Kaiser High, Mary Jane Mai Nhan of Kaimuki High and Cherry Cachero of Farrington High, $1,000 each.

Market City Foundation awarded $1,000 scholarships to Chatess Fausta R. Baguio of Sacred Hearts Academy and Elizabeth A. Kim of Kalani High.

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council awarded the following scholarships to these students:

The Paul S. Honda Scholarship of $1,000 — Branden Ibara of Damien High, Kauilani Ostrem of Kahuku High, Kristi Kusunoki of Maui High and Brandon Imamura of Roosevelt High; the Eddie Tangen Award of $100 — Coty Ishitani of Wai'anae High and Wilson Unga of Kahuku High; and the Edwin F. Black Award of $1,000 — Tracy Saturno of Wai'anae High.
