Legislative leaders on right track with veto
It's good to hear House Speaker Calvin Say and Senate President Robert Bunda say they would rather wait until the next legislative session to take up the touchy age-of-consent issue again.
The Legislature is under considerable pressure to reconvene to override a veto of a sexual-consent bill passed unanimously this year. A special session for that purpose would be a mistake.
The bill vetoed by Gov. Cayetano as much as admits that the facts and study needed to produce a solid age-of-consent bill are missing. It calls for a study on the issue of raising the age from today's 14 to 16, as well as a review of the situation in other states.
All that should take place first. Then the Legislature can act.
Right now, supporters of an override are riding on emotion heartfelt, and understandable, certainly but still emotion.
