Isle trio compete in world karate

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's George Kotaka, Elisa Au and Barbara Chinen were part of the 18-member Team USA, which won eight medals at the third annual WC Karate World Championships, held June 23-24 at Aberdeen, Scotland.

Chinen and Au finished first and third, respectively, in the Shito-Ryu kata (forms) division.

Au also won a gold medal in the Shobu 3-point match in the kumite (sparring) competition.

Au was presented the Sir Sean Connery award for the Most Outstanding Competitor of the tournament.

MEETING

• Quarterback Club: Neil Everett of ESPN, a former Hawai'i sportscaster, will be the featured speaker at the weekly Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting tomorrow at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Also scheduled to speak are Andy Johnson, coach of the University of Hawai'i national sailing champions, and Jim Donovan, UH associate athletic director.

Lunch costs $7 and starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow around noon.

For more information, call Al Minn at 261-5143.

SURFING

• Irons scores high: Andy Irons of Kaua'i posted the highest score of the day during a first-round victory in the Rio Surf International yesterday at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Irons' three-wave total of 25.0 (out of 30) included a near-perfect ride of 9.75 early in the heat. No other surfer received a total score higher than 22.

Irons was the only Hawai'i surfer to win a first-round heat. World champion Sunny Garcia, Kalani Robb, Shane Dorian and Shawn Sutton were all defeated, but not eliminated. They will have to surf in the loser-out second round.

Irons received a bye into the third round.
