Tip-Off
Punk rocker Patti Smith to play World Cafe

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

Patti Smith, one of punk rock's poetic voices, will perform at 8 p.m. Aug. 1 at the World Cafe, 1130 N. Nimitz Highway.

Doors open at 7 p.m.

Smith, known for her acclaimed 1975 recording debut, "Horses," is one of the luminous forces of evocative rock. She's known for her anti-fashion, adrogynous fashion sense and innovative, pioneering style, mixing angst-filled poetic lyrics with a punk-rock tempo. At 53, she is no hip wannabe but an established figure.

Over the years, she has released albums that have connected with her loyalists: "Radio Ethiopia," "Easter," "Wave," "Dream of Life," "Gone Again," "Peace and Noise" and "Gung Ho." She also is an eloquent artist in other media, including art, photographs and poetry.

Among her signature tunes: "People Have the Power," a milestone 1988 collaboration with three of her closest companions: her husband Fred "Sonic" Smith, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (who did the album cover) and keyboarder Richard Sohl, all of whom have since died.
