Mililani standout to play tennis for Hawai'i-Hilo

Mililani High School's Krystal Hangai will be joining the University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's tennis team.

Hangai was a member of Mililani's four OIA championship teams, won the league's singles title last season, and was the OIA Western Division player of the year.

She placed fourth in the state tournament.

SURFING

• Garcia advances: Current world champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae defeated three-time former world champ Tom Curren in the second round of the Rio Surf International yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Garcia's top three waves scored 24.0 (out of 30), which was the highest total of the second round. Curren, who is from California, scored 16.75 for his top three waves.

Garcia was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance yesterday. Kapolei's Kalani Robb, who was the defending champion of the event, was upset and eliminated by Brazilian Paulo Moura.

Shane Dorian of Kailua-Kona and Shawn Sutton of 'Ewa Beach were also eliminated.

CAMPS

• Wahine volleyball: The 20th annual Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp features four sessions for girls and boys entering grades 4-12.

University of Hawai'i coach Dave Shoji, his staff, and current and former players will conduct the camps.

The first session is finished, with the second July 19-22, third July 30-Aug. 2 and fourth Aug. 4-7.

All will be from 1-5 p.m. Registration fee for each camp is $130. Dormitory and meal service is available for the final camp, for $375.

Campers will be put in beginning, intermediate or advanced levels.

Each camp will emphasize individual training and have special individual skill sessions for all positions.
