The Left Lane
'A.I.' outsells the rest

"A.I. Artificial Intelligence," the fantasy that Steven Spielberg inherited from Stanley Kubrick, about a robotic boy who longs to become human, grossed an estimated $30.1 million over the weekend to become No. 1 in North America.

"Thirty million is a very strong opening, given that it's a long movie that pretty clearly is not for kids," says Dan Marks, a box office analyst with ACNielsen EDI. The big-budget spectacle opened to mixed reviews from critics, and some cautioned that it might be a bit too dark for kids. Even Spielberg recently told USA Today, "I would show this film to my 9-year-old, but I would certainly watch it with him because it's dark. But it's also redemptive."

The other weekend winners and their earnings: No. 2, "The Fast and the Furious," $20 million; 3. "Dr. Dolittle 2," $15.4 million; 4. "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," $9.8 million; 5. "Baby Boy," $8.6 million; 6. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," $7.8 million; 7. "Shrek," $7.1 million; 8. "crazy/beautiful," $4.5 million; 9. "Pearl Harbor," $4.4 million; 10. "Swordfish," $4 million.

Survivors ready — for 'Survivor 4'?

With production soon to begin on the third installment of "Survivor" in Kenya, producer Mark Burnett and his crew have now begun work on a fourth edition.

A location has not been revealed, but online "Survivor" wannabes, who apply on the CBS "Survivors" Web site (www.cbs.com), are notified they must be available for a seven-week shoot November, December or January. Burnett has readily discussed scouting locations in South America, such as Peru and Brazil, in preparation for the third version, which landed in Africa — so it's likely he'll pick one of those sites.

Potential players must fill out the application and mail it to CBS, along with a three-minute videotape. All applications must be in by July 27.

Producers will select 500 candidates to be interviewed in August or September, leading to a group of 48 finalists.

Maui home fit for a celebrity

Kelsey Grammer's Maui home is the subject of a cover story in the August issue of Architectural Digest.

The magazine provides a colorful look at the 8,500-square-foot home that the actor and his wife, Camille, built on a bluff overlooking Kapalua Bay.

The home's amenities include a spa with glass-enclosed steam room, two jacuzzis, cold plunge, exercise room, a slate-edge pool with waterfall and great views of Moloka'i and Lana'i.

Maui architect Rick Ryniak designed the house, which features a 20-foot ceiling in the central great room. Designer Kathy Merrill of the Honolulu firm of Philpotts & Associates did the interior, mostly in earth tones to showcase the couple's collection of furnishings and textiles. Landscape architect Russel Gushi of Maui handled landscaping.

The magazine, which reaches 4.4 million readers worldwide monthly, is due on newsstands next Tuesday.
