A day full of activities begins early this morning with the annual 5K fun run at Schofield Barracks and wraps up with fireworks displays at four sites. In between, residents will have their choice of parades, picnics, specials at the malls, concerts and public tours to celebrate the nation's 225th birthday.
Kailua resident Howell Mahoe, a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars, displays 30 flags in his yard.
Although everyone is encouraged to have fun today, authorities are asking people to use caution if they plan to pop fireworks, and to drink responsibly.
The private use of fireworks will be allowed only from 1-9 p.m. today and those who have purchased up to 5,000 pieces of firecrackers had to have a $25 permit.
At the close of business yesterday, only 94 permits were issued on O'ahu, said fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.
The Coast Guard said July 4 is the deadliest holiday for boaters in the United States. Enforcement officers will be out today to ensure that boating laws are followed.
