St. Louis School gets WASC accreditation

Advertiser Staff

St. Louis School recently received its Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) certified accreditation.

"This has been an ongoing effort by the entire school, with a full year of preparation," said St. Louis President Father Allen DeLong. "Not all schools get accredited at the time they are reviewed, so we take nothing for granted."

According to Jayne Mondoy, St. Louis vice principal for academics and self-study coordinator, the school will remain a WASC accredited institution for the next six years and passed "with flying colors."

WASC is one of six regional associations that nationally accredits public and private schools, colleges and universities. Every six years, schools are subject to evaluation to certify that they meet established criteria or standards. St. Louis had its evaluation in March.

According to St. Louis officials, accreditation is "an essential characteristic" for educational institutions, similar to approval by the Department of Education.

Schools not accredited must declare so by law. The evaluation determines whether or not an institution qualifies for regional recognition, and the periodic self-study is used to promote educational quality.
