UH moves homecoming football game
Advertiser Staff and News Services
The University of Hawai'i athletic department has rescheduled its homecoming football game for Nov. 10 against Boise State.
The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 27 against Fresno State, but ESPN asked that the game be moved to Friday, Oct. 26.
This prompted UH officials to move the homecoming date.
YACHTING
Shanakee II leads Transpac: Thanks to a six-day headstart, a new 75-foot sloop with all the comforts of many homes apparently will be the first boat to finish the 41st Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawai'i.
Housing developer Jim Warmington's Shanakee II, a David Pedrick design, started June 25 with the Aloha Division and flew past the two-thirds mark yesterday after reporting a position of 809 nautical miles from Honolulu.
In an off year for big wind, even Philippe Kahn's new "super sled" Pegasus, the current leader in Division I, couldn't afford to spot Shanakee II nearly a week and hope to beat it to the Diamond Head finish line.
Shanakee II has averaged 157 miles per day and logged 211 miles each of the past two days, which means it should finish Saturday or Sunday.
Pegasus, also 75 feet but relatively stripped out for racing, found enough breeze to sail 293 miles in the 24 hours before yesterday morning's roll call, but it would have to average 363 miles to overtake Warmington's floating mini-palace.
Transpac's 24-hour record is 353 miles.
An important point, however, is that although the coveted Barn Door trophy has "first to finish" carved across its koa wood face, Shanakee II probably won't win the race.
When Transpac went to staggered starts a few years ago, the definition was changed to "monohull with the fastest elapsed time."
SURFING
Garcia ousted: World champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Rio Surf International yesterday at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Two rounds of competition were completed yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves. Garcia won his fourth-round heat, beating Brazilian Fabio Gouveia, 16.1-15.35.
In the quarterfinals, rookie Joel Parkinson of Australia defeated Garcia, 20.4-18.4.
