Winds to clear stifling heat tomorrow

By Mike Gordon

The tradewinds will return tomorrow.

After a week of stifling humidity, few words have sounded better.

Roy Matsuda, a forecaster at the National Weather Service, said islanders can expect the return of normal tradewinds through the weekend, and showers as well.

The weather service could tell you all about the filling of an upper low to the north, and how it will drift west and allow a high pressure to build ... but all you really need to know is that tradewinds will range from 10 to 20 mph, and that will provide welcome relief.

The weather service predicted a high of 88 today and a high tomorrow of 86.

Much of the state will endure one more day of stifling heat. Winds of 5 to 15 mph were expected to dominate throughout today, Matsuda said.

He said it actually has cooled down over the last two days as the dew point, which helps measure humidity, gradually decreased.

"It will feel better with the tradewinds," Matsuda predicted. "It will still be summerish — you will get a lot of sun —but it won't feel hot."
