Man accused of assault at Ala Wai

Police arrested a 39-year-old man after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a 30-year-old woman at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor yesterday.

According to police, the incident happened at 5:30 p.m. when the man, driving a motorized inflatable boat, cornered a 12-year-old girl who was operating a paddleboat in the harbor.

The man trapped the girl in a boat slip for several minutes before the girl fled onto the pier and reported the incident to her mother who was nearby.

The mother confronted the man and argued with him.

The man then tried to sexually assault the woman, but the woman was able to fight him off, police said.

Bystanders subdued the man and police arrested him on suspicion of kidnapping, first-degree attempted sexual assault and third-degree assault.

Man suspected in store robbery

Police have charged a 23-year-old man in connection with a jewelry store robbery in Waipahu last month in which two robbers got away with $40,000 in merchandise.

Police charged Bronson Gouveia, who has no local address, with first-degree robbery and set his bail at $35,000.

According to police, Gouveia was one of two robbers who entered Debbie's Jewelry at the Waipahu Town Center at 10:59 a.m. on June 23.

Police said Gouveia smashed the display case with a crowbar and threatened six store employees.

The two robbers fled with the jewelry and were aided by a third person who was driving a stolen car.

No one was seriously hurt, but the store operator's 12-year-old male cousin was cut on the neck by flying glass.
