The Left Lane
Keep it short

Jeff Katts wants your shorts.

As executive director of October's third annual 'Ohina Short Film Showcase at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theater, Katts is gathering short films by local independent filmmakers. Film and video entries for the non-competitive showcase are being accepted until Aug. 3.

Entries must be under 30 minutes in length and submitted on VHS tape. For entry forms and submission instructions, call Katts at 951-4413.

Katts called the collection of entries he had received so far "interesting" and "provocative." His best advice for getting your flick in 'Ohina? "Keeping it under 10 minutes or so really helps."

Eyes on the hands

Magician David Copperfield, performing Aug. 18-26 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, will do a show for the deaf and hearing-impaired at 5 p.m. Aug. 19, the only one of Copperfield's shows to be so interpreted.

Tickets are on sale now at the Blaisdell box office, Ticket Plus outlets and by phone, 526-4400.

Timepiece

In "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," the highly anticipated computer-generated sci-fi film, Dr. Aki, the heroine charged with saving the world from an alien invasion in the year 2065, relies on her Wrist Holo watch to caution her of imminent danger.

You, too, can get that timepiece — sort of — since Seiko has produced the Final Fantasy Watch, inspired by Dr. Aki's, with all the frou-frou of a high-tech space-age instrument: square numerical digital display, calendar that runs through 2046, four time modes, daily alarm, luminescent backlighting, chronograph that counts 1/100 seconds up to 10 hours, and more.

Cost: $200.

We checked with several dealers, who say the watch is heading this way but not yet available. Ben Bridge Time Works expects to stock it.
