Lanikai captures Macfarlane title

By Dayton Morinaga

Lanikai dug in at the finish to win the girls 12 race in the Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta off Waikiki Beach yesterday. Lanikai won the overall title for the fourth consecutive year.

The Lanikai Canoe Club celebrated its own version of "The Fourth" yesterday.

Riding a late surge, Lanikai won its fourth consecutive Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta yesterday off Waikiki Beach.

"It's such a good-fun race and there's so much tradition involved that it really is special to win this one," Lanikai head coach John Foti said.

The Macfarlane Regatta has been held off Waikiki every year since 1943, making it the longest-running canoe regatta in the world. It is also considered the most prestigious regular-season event of the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

"This is probably the only regatta where everybody comes early and everybody stays late," Foti said. "It's kind of like a big party on the beach."

In the end, Lanikai was the life of the party, scoring 86 points to win its fourth consecutive regatta this season. The host club, Outrigger, which led for most of the regatta, placed second with 82. Kailua was third with 63, and Hui Nalu fourth with 61.

Anuenue and Waikiki Surf Club scored 21 points each to tie for top honors in the A division for smaller clubs.

After 31 of yesterday's 36 races were completed, Outrigger led Lanikai, 76-63. But Lanikai won four of the final five races (men open-four, mixed open-six, women 35-over and men 35-over), and out-scored Outrigger, 23-6 down the stretch.

"It was like, all of a sudden, we had a flurry of firsts and seconds," Foti said. "Everything was going our way."

Outrigger head coach Kehau Kali said: "We're disappointed, especially because we had such a strong showing. But we still feel good about our performance. We're building momentum."

Waves of 1 to 2 feet were breaking off Waikiki yesterday, providing crews with thrilling rides to shore.

In Macfarlane Regatta tradition, every crew was allowed to use an "open" steersman for safety purposes (experienced steersmen help keep the canoes on course while riding waves).

Outrigger finished with a regatta-high 11 race wins, and Marc Haine led all steersmen with five wins.

"It was fun because the advantage changed throughout the day," Haine said. "Sometimes, the swell would hit lanes four, five and six. Other times it would hit one, two and three."

The most significant of Haine's victories was in the women's senior race — the top division for females. He steered the crew of Mary Smolenski, Traci Phillips, Malia Kamisugi and his sister, Kisi Haine, to a 10-second win over Hui Nalu.

"Right off the start, we got pushed ahead by this surging backwash," he said. "In the first 10 seconds, it was like we took off like a rocket ship and we held it the rest of the way."

Lanikai finished with nine race victories, but surprisingly, the senior men's race was not one of them.

Hui Nalu won the prestigious men's senior race, completing the 1à-mile course in 10 minutes, 4.62 seconds. Lanikai was second in 10:17.73. It was the first time in nine years that Lanikai did not win the men's senior race at the Macfarlane Regatta. Hui Nalu also won it in 1992.

"Lanikai has dominated for so long, you almost expect them to win it every time," said Chris Ball, who paddled on Hui Nalu's winning crews both yesterday and in 1992. "But we worked real hard to get on a (wave) coming in after the first turn, and we got it and it gave us a really good lead."

Other members of yesterday's winning crew were Bill Pratt, Wyatt Jones, Steve Kelly, Maui Kjeldsen and Billy Balding.

Foti, who paddled on the Lanikai senior men's crew, said: "We wanted to get on that same wave, but we couldn't quite make it and, boom, they ran away."

In another Macfarlane tradition, the Outrigger women and Hui Nalu men got to drink champagne out of a silver cup during the awards ceremony.

"We were bummed out after losing that race," Foti said. "But winning the regatta certainly helped us feel better."

Since placing third in the season-opening regatta, Lanikai has since averaged 88 points in winning the last four OHCRA regattas.

"I'm just trying to make sure our crews and our coaches don't get too comfortable with this and lose the hunger," Foti said. "Yeah, we've been winning, but it's going down to the wire every week."
