Wahiawa golfer leads Jr. Masters

Nick Mason, from Wahiawa, shot a 68 yesterday to take the lead of the 16- to 18-year-old boys division of the World Junior Masters Tournament at the Mililani Golf Club.

Mason was at 140 after two rounds, one shot ahead of Kevin Shimomura of Lahaina, Maui. First-round leader Derek O'Neill of Littleton, Colo., shot a 72 yesterday and is two shots back.

Joan Shimozaki, of Kihei, Maui, shot a 74 to lead the girls 13-18 competition at 149. Ayumi Hori of

Honolulu is four strokes back after a 79 yesterday.

Philip Francis, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is first in the10-12 boys division. He shot a 73 yesterday after a 67 on Tuesday.

The tournament continues today.

YACHTING

Pegasus leads: Philippe Kahn's Pegasus led the bigger boats of Division I and II in yesterday's daily report of the 41st Transpacific Yacht Race from Palos Verdes, Calif., to Honolulu.

The 75-foot Pegasus was at 1,561 miles after a 304-mile day. Bob McNulty's 74-foot Chance was six miles behind, and Roy Disney's 73-foot Pyewacket was 11 miles back in Division I. Winds were reported at 10- to 12-knots but bearing down from behind.

Division II is led by James McDowell's 70-foot Grand Illusion. The bigger boats began racing on Sunday, while two other divisions started Saturday.

"Aloha Division" boats began June 25. Jim Warmington's Shanakee II had 595 miles to go and is expected to be the first boat to finish late Friday night.

A total of 32 boats remain in the 2,225 nautical mile race.

SURFING

Australian rookie wins: World tour rookie Trent Munro of Australia won the Rio Surf International yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Munro defeated former world champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia in the final to win the $30,000 first prize.

Current world champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae tied for fifth and received $8,000.

After three of eight contests on this year's world tour, C.J. Hobgood of Florida is rated No. 1 with 2,494 points. Occhilupo is second with 2,336. Garcia is fourth (1,942), and Kaua'i's Andy Irons fifth (1,876).

COMPETITION

Strong man: Power Unlimited's first Strong Man Challenge is 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Saturday at Windward Mall.
