Suspect arrested at boat harbor
Police arrested a 39-year-old man after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a 30-year-old woman Wednesday at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
According to police, the incident happened at 5:30 p.m. when the man, driving a motorized inflatable boat, cornered a 12-year-old girl who was operating a paddleboat in the harbor.
The man trapped the girl in a boat slip for several minutes before the girl fled onto the pier and reported the incident to her mother who was nearby.
The mother confronted the man and argued with him.
The man then tried to sexually assault the woman, but she was able to fight him off, police said.
Bystanders subdued the man and police arrested him on suspicion of kidnapping, first-degree attempted sexual assault and third-degree assault.
Man, 23, charged in Waipahu robbery
Police have charged a 23-year-old man in connection with a jewelry store robbery in Waipahu last month in which two robbers got away with $40,000 in merchandise.
Police charged Bronson Gouveia, who has no local address, with first-degree robbery and set his bail at $35,000.
According to police, Gouveia was one of two robbers who entered Debbie's Jewelry at the Waipahu Town Center at 10:59 a.m. on June 23.
Police said Gouveia smashed the display case with a crowbar and threatened six store employees.
The two robbers fled with the jewelry and were aided by a third person who was driving a stolen car.
No one was seriously hurt, but the store operator's 12-year-old male cousin was cut on the neck by flying glass.
Waikiki hotel fire damages room
Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged a fifth-floor room at the Ohana Waikiki Surf East Hotel yesterday afternoon.
The fire at 442 Royal Hawaiian Ave. was reported at about 2:30 after a fire alarm was activated, said Capt. Richard Soo, fire department spokesman. The blaze activated two sprinklers and damage was contained to a bed in the room, Soo said.
None of the three women guests was in the room at the time of the fire and there were no reports of injuries. Damage was estimated at $12,000 to the building and contents, Soo said.
Driver in 'Ewa chase died of skull fracture
A man killed Wednesday during a high-speed chase by police died of a skull fracture, the medical examiner's office said yesterday. Police, who have not released the driver's name, said he is 58-year-old man from Wai'anae.
The man died when his car overturned about 2:37 a.m. Wednesday on Old Farrington Highway at Old Fort Weaver Road near Kahi Mohala psychiatric hospital in 'Ewa. Officers said they had clocked him at speeds up to 95 mph.
