Bicyclist fails in bank heist

HILO, Hawai'i — A man tried to rob a bank in downtown Hilo yesterday morning but fled without taking any money, police said.

The man entered the Hawai'i National Bank branch on Kalakaua Street at 9:17 a.m. and presented a teller a note demanding money.

Police did not say if a weapon was displayed. When the teller refused, he fled on a bicycle heading makai on Kalakaua and then turned in the Keaukaha direction on Kamehameha Avenue.

The man was described as Caucasian, 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds. He was wearing dark glasses and a green parka-type jacket.


Free dump visits Sundays on Maui

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui residents can make free trips to county dumps every Sunday, under a new policy started this month.

Previously, the $6-per-load fee was waived only one Sunday a month.

Sunday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Central Maui Sanitary Landfill, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Olowalu Convenience Center, and 8 a.m. to noon at the Moloka'i Integrated Solid Waste Facility.

Hana residents can dump their trash for free at the Hana Sanitary Landfill from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.


Workshop to aid new volunteers

WAILUKU, Maui — Today is the deadline to sign up for a July 13 workshop for Maui organizations that use volunteers.

The workshop, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cameron Center in Wailuku, will be run by the Network of Volunteer Leaders. Topics include volunteer recruitment, retention and recognition.

Islands' weather topic of lecture

KIHEI, MAUI — Glenn James, who produces and hosts the TV show "Maui Weather Today," will share information and insights on wind, waves and storms in the Islands during a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

His free talk is part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary lecture series held at sanctuary headquarters, 726 S. Kihei Road.

James' TV show can be seen from 7:45-8 a.m. weekdays on various public access cable channels. He also provides updates of weather conditions on his Web site, hawaiiweathertoday.com.


Foundation plans new projects

KAHULUI, Maui — The Maui Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kahului Community Center Annex.

Agenda items include planning for the Ho'okipa Beach cleanup, cookout and concert July 21, updates on the planned Ma'alaea Harbor expansion, and development at the old lime kiln site on Baldwin Beach.

UH Maui outreach sign-up to begin

KAHULUI, Maui — Enrollment begins Monday for University of Hawai'i-Manoa outreach programs on Maui.

Undergraduate courses, which start as early as Aug. 21, include ecological anthropology, international law and peace, literature of the Pacific, religion, Hawaiian language and ethnic studies.
