Chance takes over first in Transpac

Bob McNulty of Corona de Mar, Calif., and his yacht Chance moved into first place near the halfway point in the 41st Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

Chance is five miles ahead of Roy E. Disney's record-holding Pyewacket and eight miles ahead of Pegasus.

KARATE

• IKF wins 142 medals: The International Karate Federation's Hawai'i Team, which had 27 participants, captured a total of 142 medals at the 2001 AAU/USA National Karate Championship, June 26-30, at New Orleans, Louisiana.

The highlight of the tournament was Hawai'i's George Kotaka winning six gold medals and the prestigious kumite (sparring) grand champion title.

Also, Noelani Mikami (9 years old) and Melita Hernaez-Yasuda (44) each won six gold medals and one silver.


VOLLEYBALL

• Jammers take third: The Jammers Volleyball Club 12-1 team took third place at the USA Volleyball Association's Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Jammers are comprised of Honolulu girls who are 11 through 13.

Among the victories, the Jammers beat Cajunland VBC (25-12, 12-25, 15-5). In 2000, Cajunland VBC won the silver medal.


SWIMMING

• Keo Nakama Invitational: Twenty-nine swimming clubs, including teams from California, Arizona and Fiji, will compete in the 53rd annual Keo Nakama Invitational at the Palolo Recreation Pool.

The meet will be held today through Sunday. Opening ceremonies are 8:15 a.m., tomorrow.


CAMPS

• Wahine volleyball: The Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp features four sessions for girls and boys entering grades 4-12. University of Hawai'i coach Dave Shoji, his staff, and current and former players will conduct the camps.

The first session is finished, with the second July 19-22, third July 30-Aug. 2 and four Aug. 4-7. All will be from 1-5 p.m. The registration fee for each camp is $130. Dormitory and meal service is available for the final camp, for $375.
