Play has deeper meaning

By Jean Chow

Local playwright Lisa Matsumoto takes a turn from her usual all-comedy plays with her latest production, "On Dragonfly Wings," a musical adapted from the children's book "Wailana the Waterbug." It is the story of Wendy, portrayed by Jane Parrish, pictured, a young waterbug who must travel to the water's surface for the mysterious transformation that all bugs of her kind must face. The book was inspired by Alana Dung, a local 3-year-old who died of leukemia in 1997.

Matsumoto said the show is suitable for the whole family. "For the really young kids, it will be a play about a waterbug who turns into a dragonfly; they will probably not make the connection between the issue of life and death. (But) older kids and adults will make the connection," she said. "We just hope (the play) will be an inspiring experience."

The show premieres Friday, and will continue to run Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. until August 12 at the Leeward Community College Theatre. Tickets are $10-$30 ($50 for premiere night, with pupu and drinks), and can be purchased through 484-8800 or online at www.ohia.com.
