Achievers

Dara Fukuhara, a student at the University of Hawai'i, Manoa, was awarded a $250 Student Aid Award for Physically Disabled Students from the Venture Club of Honolulu.

Chad Hiu of 'Ewa Beach was awarded the 2001 academic achievement award for outstanding performance by a first-year student in Human Services and Administration at Springfield College.

Richard Radtke of Honolulu was named the 2001 Father of the Year by the Hawai'i division of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Anthony Ramos of Kamehameha School was named the 2001 MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals Hawai'i High School Principal of the Year by the Hawai'i Association of Secondary School Administrators.

Pualani Gandall Yamamoto, an undergraduate student in the Nursing Program at the University of Hawai'i, Manoa, was awarded the Morris K. Udall Scholarship, a one-year scholarship that will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $5,000 a year.

The Aloha Festivals committee selected the following local residents as the high ali'i on O'ahu's Aloha Festivals Royal Court. These people will preside over the Aloha Festivals this year and will serve as regal symbols of Hawai'i's largest celebration. They are: Jack Kulani Williams of Waipahu, king; Joella Mae U'ilani Halbuna of Wahiawa, queen; Thomas Mitchell Kaulana Eli Jr. of Wai'anae, prince; Sanoe Waianuhea Ponimoi Damon of Mililani, princess.

DeVry Institute of Technology in Columbus awarded Robert T. Lisska and Henry Pham, both of Waipahu, each a dean's partial-tuition scholarship valued up to $9,000.

The board of directors of Junior Achievement of Hawaii presented awards to the following students: Sophia Wong of Roosevelt High, Venture Capital Deal of the Year $1,000 scholarship; Jonathan Higa of Roosevelt High, Andersen $750 award; Matthew Johnson of Hilo, Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu Inc. $750 award; Shauni Snorgrass of Waiakea, We The Women of Hawaii $1,000 scholarship.

The Honolulu Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. awarded $1,000 scholarships to Michelle Isa of Kailua High and Chelsea Yamabe of Kalaheo High.

Recipients of the Senator Brian Kanno Scholarships, each worth $250, are: Stephen A. Aguinaldo and Ivy J. Epan, graduates of Campbell High, and Ernafe B. Caliboso and Christian R. Susa, graduates of Waipahu High.

The Windward Arts Council presented Achievement Awards to the following students: Castle High — Michelle Yoshida for visual arts, Chelsea Maedo and Ikaika Tecson for music, Laine Yoshioka and Jana Anguay for theater arts; Mid-Pacific Institute — Adrienne Vogel for dance; Kahuku High & Intermediate — Ji-Hye Jean for creative writing, Ke'ilani Yang for music; La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls — Portland Knox for visual arts; Punahou School — Rachel DeBoard for music.
