Organizers hope to be ready for official commissioning by July 4, 2002, the 100th anniversary of the national organization.

The new organization will serve the communities between Kapahulu and Waimanalo.

The Navy League is an independent, nonprofit, civilian educational organization dedicated to helping the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Membership is open to all citizens not on active duty.

ARMY

Kaua'i to be site of training

KAUA'I — About 300 soldiers from the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army, Hawai'i, will deploy to Kaua'i on Thursday and Friday for a two-day battalion air assault exercise.

Division units taking part in the exercise are the 325th Forward Support Battalion and the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment. The training will be conducted near the Kaua'i National Guard Armory with Air National Guard units from Hawai'i, Texas and Arizona.

The units' mission is to secure Barking Sands and conduct a noncombatant evacuation operation.

The training will include a live-fire exercise.

Military vehicles will travel from Barking Sands, along Highway 50, down to Hanapīpī. Traffic congestion may occur between noon Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday because of slow-moving vehicles.

Aircraft will fly over the area from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday. The aircraft will land at Port Allen airport and soldiers will move across the beach to the Hanaepe armory.
