Kane'ohe wins Koa Kai canoe race

Novice A men's crews begin their race at the Koa Kai Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. It was the seventh Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a canoe regatta of the season. Kane'ohe and Koa Kai were regatta winners.

Kane'ohe broke through in its tight weekly competition with Lokahi with a victory at the Koa Kai canoe regatta yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon, according to meet officials.

Lokahi had won three consecutive regattas before placing second yesterday. After seven meets, Lokahi has four victories and Kane'ohe three.

Host Koa Kai won the A division for smaller clubs.

The next Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regatta is the Waikiki Beach Boys meet Sunday at Waikiki.

Results for yesterday's meet were not received in time for today's edition of The Advertiser.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Harris to speak: Mayor Jeremy Harris will be the featured speaker at the Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting today at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Harris will speak about plans for athletic facilities.

Also speaking are Interscholastic League of Honolulu executive secretary Clay Benham and canoe paddling brothers John and Jim Foti.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon.

VOLLEYBALL

• Metzger-Wong team 13th: Hawai'i's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong finished tied for 13th at the FIBA Beach Volleyball World Tour event yesterday in Stavanger, Norway.

Top-seeded Tande Ramos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil won the $27,000 first prize, topped brothers Martin and Paul Laciga of Switzerland, 21-19, 21-15, in the final.

Metzger and Wong, former Punahou athletes, earned $4,000.

Danalee Bragado of Honolulu and Ali Wood of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., finished 13th in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event yesterday in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.

Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil beat Barbra Fontana of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Elaine Youngs of Encinitas, Calif., 21-15, 22-20, for the $27,000 first prize. Bragado and Wood earned $4,000.

HONORS

• Kono Day: Gov. Ben Cayetano will proclaim Stephanie Kono Day in a ceremony today at the State Capitol.

Kono, an 11-year-old Punahou student, became the youngest winner of the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship on June 29.
