Board of Water Supply crews were expected to work through the early evening to fix a broken underground water pipe on Ala Moana Boulevard that forced the closure of two eastbound lanes this morning.

The pipe break happened on the park side of Ala Moana Boulevard just before Atkinson Drive and across from the Ala Moana Center's Liberty House, said a Board of Water Supply spokesman.

Repair crews responded just after 4:30 a.m. to fix the ruptured six-inch pipe that feeds a fire hydrant, Gonsalves said.

Repairs were expected to take six to eight hours, Gonsalves said. No businesses were affected by the break, Gonsalves said.

Police today advised motorists to avoid the area and take an alternate route. Police originally closed three eastbound lanes, but later reopened two lanes at about 4:30 a.m. The cause of the break was still under investigation.
