Trans Hawaiian files Chapter 11

Hawai'i's second-largest tour and transportation company, Trans Hawaiian Services Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last week.

The company, which operates four affiliated businesses on O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island, was acquired late last year by a Nevada investment company.

Trans Hawaiian listed combined assets of about $1 million and debts of about $7 million. Trans Hawaiian had about 360 employees, according to a 1999 state filing, and operates airport shuttle service on O'ahu and Maui in addition to statewide tour services. Company representatives could not be reached today.

Trans Hawaiian was purchased last year by a Nevada company headed by Mark and Scott Iwamoto, son's of Robert Iwamoto Jr., chief excutive of Roberts Tours & Transportation. Roberts operates Trans Hawaiian through a management contract.
