Man stabbed outside restaurant

A 20-year-old man was in serious condition at the Queen's Medical Center yesterday after he was stabbed outside the McCully Zippy's Restaurant Sunday night, police said.

Police said the man and two friends had just walked out of the restaurant at 1725 South King St. at 11:53 p.m. when a group of about 15 men approached and challenged them to a fight.

The victim was stabbed in the back twice. The suspects fled in several cars.

After an all-points bulletin was broadcast, officers stopped and arrested three men, ages 20, 21 and 24, on suspicion of second-degree assault after conducting a field lineup.

Man sentenced in drug case

A 61-year-old Wai'anae man was sentenced yesterday to more than 22 years in federal prison following his February conviction on drug and firearms charges.

Chief U.S. District Judge David Ezra sentenced Joseph Correia to 265 months in prison after he was found guilty in February of conspiring to traffic methamphetamine and possessing methamphetamine for distribution.

U.S. Attorney Elliot Enoki said Correia and co-defendant Glenda Kawaiaea distributed methamphetamine from Correia's residence between 1997 and Dec. 4, 1998, when police raided the home. Police recovered drugs, scales, drug paraphernalia, 11 firearms and $334,800 in cash.

Enoki said the Wai'anae home was equipped with a "take-out" window, flashing sign and an elaborate surveillance system.

Kawaiaea pleaded guilty in November and testified against Correia at trial.

Heroics save home from fire

A 41-year-old man used two garden hoses to fight a fire at a neighbor's house in Wai'anae yesterday — a move that saved the home, according to Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Richard Soo.

The fire occurred at 2:45 p.m. in a three-bedroom house at 85-794 Lahui St. HFD brought the fire under control within 10 minutes, but the blaze did $10,000 in damage to the home and $2,000 damage to its contents.

The Red Cross is assisting the two adults and four children displaced by the fire.

Swimmer held in Waikiki robbery

Police have arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of second-degree robbery after liquor was stolen from a Waikiki store Sunday night and a security officer assaulted by a robber who fled by swimming across the Ala Wai Canal.

Police said the robber took a bottle from the store about 6:40 p.m. and struck the security guard in the head.

They arrested a man at the Ala Wai Golf Course whom they said had fled by swimming across the canal.
