Didgets
New service debuts in Islands

If you're an AT&T Wireless customer with cell-phone time on your hands, here's a way to use up those minutes by listening, not jabbering.

The company has come up with a service known as "One-to-One," or "#121," which is what you punch in on the little keyboard.

What comes on is a voice-activated menu that, on our trial, seemed pretty easy to figure out and navigate. You can call out one of the announced options to activate it. These include driving directions, movie listings, stock quotes, news updates and weather.

On movie listings, for instance, the system allows you to choose a zip code and then a particular theater. We noticed, however, that some newer cinemas, such as the ones at Windward Mall, hadn't yet been added into the database.

There's no surcharge for any of this, but it would be easy to squander a lot of time here, so be careful.

On the other hand, the Mainland pronunciation of some of our place names had its own entertainment value. The theater listings were bad enough, let alone what they might do with some street directions.
