Mom arrested in rice paddle attack

A Waikiki boy suffered numerous injuries, including a large cut to the head, after being struck with a rice paddle by his mother yesterday at their Kalakaua home, police said.

They said the mother was upset because the boy took a rice paddle.

The boy was hurt trying to defend himself. The mother was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Man surrenders in Makaha stabbing

Police arrested a 21-year-old Mahaka man today in connection with a stabbing that sent a 40-year-old woman to Tripler Army Medical Center in critical condition Monday night.

The woman has since been upgraded to guarded condition, police said.

The man turned himself in at the Wai'anae police station, where he was arrested this morning on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening, police said.

They said he stabbed his ex-girlfriend's mother during an argument at her Makaha residence, then fled in his car.

Police seek woman missing 13 years

Big Island police are asking again for help finding a woman who has been missing since August 1988.

Fran Uilani Kaniho was last seen at her home on Wright Road in Volcano. She was then 19 years old, 4-feet-9, weighed about 150 pounds with a tan complexion and brown hair.

Anyone with information about Kaniho is asked to call Det. Greg Esteban in Hilo at 961-2384, the police nonemergency number at 935-3311 or CrimeStoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo.

Liquor store clerk hit with hatchet

A Wahiawa liquor store worker suffered minor injuries after he was attacked last night by a customer swinging a hatchet, police said.

A customer who tried to buy 15 cases of beer at The Pump liquor store, 10 N. Kamehameha Highway, was refused service by a clerk who said the customer was not making sense, police said.

The customer grabbed a hatchet from his waist and attacked the worker twice.

The worker was able to take the hatchet from the customer and call police. The customer fled.

Police made the arrest later. The worker suffered a nick on his forehead and refused treatment, police said.

Fugitive teen pulled over, recaptured

A 17-year-old youth who escaped from the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Center in September was captured by police yesterday during a traffic stop.

Police said he was stopped for speeding on the H-1 Freeway eastbound near the Radford Overpass at 7 p.m.

He gave the motorcycle officer several fake names and was arrested on suspicion of driving without a license and other traffic offenses.

Police discovered his real identity and returned him to the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Center in Windward O'ahu.

Inmate arrested in 1998 robbery

An investigation into a 1998 armed robbery in 'Alewa Heights led police to arrest a 25-year-old inmate at O'ahu Community Correctional Center yesterday.

Police said a 29-year-old man walking his dog was approached by two men who forced him into his home at gunpoint the night of April 25, 1998.

They searched his home and stole cash and jewelry. One of the robbers cut him with a knife.

Police last week arrested the inmate on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping, terroristic threatening and burglary.

He was later released to OCCC, where he is serving time on a separate case.
