Water main break jams traffic on Ala Moana

Advertiser Staff

An eight-inch underground water pipe that burst on Ala Moana early yesterday proved to be more problematic than work crews originally estimated.

The Board of Water supply responded to the break at the intersection of Ala Moana and Atkinson Drive, across from Liberty House, at 3:37 a.m. yesterday. The break closed two Waikiki-bound lanes all day and into the evening. Repairs were expected to be completed late last night.

The repairs were supposed to take six to eight hours, but crews investigating the break found multiple leaks and extensive damage.

Crews set up a bypass line to the Waikiki Yacht Club, and the only other service affected was a small pumping structure in Ala Moana Park.

Two far right kokohead-bound lanes on Ala Moana were closed, and one left-turn lane was modified to allow Waikiki-bound traffic.
