Makaha brushfire burns near school
An evening brushfire behind Makaha Elementary School yesterday burned for more than an hour, putting some nearby homeowners on edge.
Six fire trucks responded to the fire at Alanaauao Place about 9 p.m., and firefighters brought it under control by 10:30 p.m. The fire did not pose a threat to the school, but homeowners on Water Street were put on alert at 9:30 p.m. after the fire moved toward the neighborhood.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Richard Soo said there was no was damage to structures.
Bank robbery suspect sought
Police are looking for a man who robbed the Kapahulu branch of City Bank yesterday. The man passed a note to a teller saying he was armed. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and fled toward the L&L Drive-In on Kapahulu Avenue.
The suspect is 30 to 40 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 2, 160 to 180 pounds, with wavy, neck-length, dirty blond hair, and a mustache and goatee. He was wearing a white baseball cap, light-blue T-shirt and jeans. Call the FBI at 566-4300 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
Husband arrested in shooting of van
A 28-year-old Wai'anae man was arrested after he allegedly fired several gunshots at his wife's unoccupied van in a domestic dispute Monday. Police said he left home at about 2:30 p.m. and shot his wife's van, parked in front of the house, eight times with a semiautomatic pistol. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering. A gun was recovered.
Woman hurt in fight over money
A woman sustained minor injuries after a confrontation with a former friend who threatened her with a knife and tried to force her to withdraw money from a bank Monday, police said.
They said the assailant punched the woman in the face after she refused to help pay for traffic tickets, demanded money and held a knife to her throat.
The woman was forced to drive to a credit union in Kailua to withdraw money, but escaped and called police. Her 1990 four-door orange and white Toyota sedan, license FRD-305, was stolen.
She was taken to the Castle Medical Center, treated and released.
Domestic dispute turns violent
A domestic dispute sparked a violent chain of events Monday in Kaka'ako.
Police said a 28-year-old woman and 34-year-old man, parents of two children, began arguing.
The man broke the woman's car window, prompting the woman to break his car window. A witness told police the man also tried to run over the woman with his truck.
The woman was treated at Queen's Medical Center for a cut arm and later told authorities she had stood in front of the truck on purpose to aggravate the man. She declined to prosecute for the damaged vehicle.
The man fled, but was later arrested. He declined to prosecute for damage to his vehicle.
