"In Celebration of Dogs" will be presented 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. July 29 at Thomas Square, offering a parade of purebreds, demonstrations and activities about obedience, service, therapy and puppy training. It's sponsored by the Windward Hawaiian Dog Fanciers' Association. Free. 239-6693.

AT&T Wildest Show in Town, the annual series of Wednesday concerts in the Honolulu Zoo, continues July 18 with Ka'au Crater Boys. New features include 'ukulele giveaways, special guided tours for up to 30 people each night, a kids coloring contest and a trivia contest. Gates open at 4:35 p.m. for picnicking; show starts at 6 p.m. Free, although donations will be accepted. 926-3191.

HULA: July 21

The 24th annual Prince Lot Hula Festival, featuring 10 hula halau, demonstrations, arts and crafts, food and a great opportunity for picnicking, takes over the grounds of Moanalua Gardens. 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. July 21. Free. 839-5334.

COLLECTIBLES: July 20-22

The 11th annual All-Collectors Show offers collectibles and antiques from Island, Mainland and international vendors at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. HULA: July 22

"Huliau 2001 — 15 Years of Hawaiian Dance, Chant and Traditions" takes the stage at Hawai'i Theatre. The concert, by Halau Hula Ka No'eau — led by kumu hula Michael Pili Pang — will feature 10 vignettes about the anthology of the hula troupe, which is celebrating its 15th year. The Kahauanu Lake Singers, Kawohi & Kalei, Mahiehie, and April Chock also will be on the program. 2 p.m. July 22. $18, $12. 528-0506. HULA: July 26-28

At 6 to 12 years old, they may be tiny dancers, but their stage presence is large. Youngsters representing 22 halau from O'ahu, Maui and Guam are slated to perform at the 26th annual Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition at Blaisdell Arena, which is presented by the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society. This year's schedule:

  • 6 p.m. July 26: Miss and Master Keiki Hula competition
  • 6 p.m. July 27: Group-Hula Kahiko competition
  • Noon July 28: Group-Hula 'Auana competition

COMEDY: July 27-28

Wickedly funny comedian-actor Tommy Davidson, an original cast member of TV's "In Living Color" and star of such films as Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" and the forthcoming "Juwanna Man," plans two concerts, joined by local funny man Andy Bumatai:

CELEBRATION: July 27-28

That annual Island-music blockbuster, the KCCN FM-100 Birthday Bash at Waikiki Shell, has expanded into a two-nighter to allow the entertainers and fans alike more time to groove. The first 5,000 through the turnstiles each night receive free CDs. Gates open at 4 p.m. each night. The lineup:

  • July 27: Fiji, Na Leo Pilimehana, Mana'o Company, Ho'onu'a, Oshen, AZ, Ten Feet, and the Island Music MVPs
  • July 28: Pati, Kapena, 'Ale'a, Natural Vibrations, Three Plus, Sean Na'auao, Koa'uka and the Island Music MVPs

One show costs $25 for pool seats, $19.50 for terrace, $18 for lawn; two shows are $32 for upper terrace, $30 for lawn (two-show tickets not available for pool seats). Tickets available at the box office and at Ticket Plus locations. 526-4400.

FESTIVAL: July 28

Never mind that garlic has been alternately known as the "stinking rose" — there are loads of activities planned for non-garlic-fans and fans alike at the Garlic Festival of Hawaii, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. July 28 at Ward Warehouse. Yes, there will be a garlic lover's store, featuring specialty garlic food items; garlic massages; and food from 10 restaurants that's likely to be flavored with the bulb du jour. But there also will be continuous entertainment (including Kapena and Danny Kaleikini); fortune telling and natural healing; cooking demonstrations; a wine tent; margarita and beer bars; a "keiki town" of activities; a raffle; a silent auction and aromatherapy (though we're betting the latter will be far removed from the garlic massages). Free valet parking. Free admission, though a $2 donation is suggested. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Hawaii Charities, host of the Sony Open in Hawaii. 545-4195.

STAGE: July 28-29

The Shanghai Children's Palace Art Troupe, right, will make its third appearance in the Islands at 7 p.m. July 28 and 2 p.m. July 29 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. The 24 youngsters, ages 10-17, who make up the troupe are performing choral works, opera, dances and music on Chinese instruments as part of a cultural exchange program. The Children's Palace, formed in 1955, is where some of China's most gifted youths are schooled in the arts and sciences. Tickets $25, $20, $15 at the box office and Ticket Plus outlets. 526-4400.

GARDEN PARTY: July 28

Foster Botanical Garden will be the scene of a "Midsummer Night's Gleam" beginning with paper luminaria lighting the path and including palm reading, food, a nature crafts table for children, a country store offering corn, cabbage and other vegetables for sale. Other attractions: Andean pan flute music, an authentic Mongolian encampment with tribesman jousting and hunting, Korean dancing. 4:30-9 p.m. July 28. Free. 522-7060, 537-1708.

FESTIVAL: July 28-29

When the 6th annual AT&T Hawai'i Dragon Boat Race runs from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. July 28 and 29 off Ala Moana Beach Park, it will be the first time the event will support a local charity, the Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation. Look for the colorful Taiwan-built, wooden boats, which are propelled by 16-paddler teams. Admission is free to the event, which includes food and craft vendors, cultural exhibits and entertainment by FortÚ, Ellsworth Simeona, Dita Holifield, Rocky Brown, Jeff Rasmussen, Reign, Tiny Tadani, Tino and the Rhythm Klub, Honolulu the Band, Solanna, eight0eight, Ben Vegas and Simplisity. 951-0350, 531-3526.

The 31st annual Ukulele Festival will feature Ohta-San, Moe Keale, Jake Shimabukuro, Lyle Ritz, Ka'au Crater Boys, Keoki Kahumoku & Herb Ohta Jr., Joy, Langley Ukulele Ensemble from Canada, Yuji Igarashi of Japan, Roy Sakuma's 'ukulele band and emcee Danny Kaleikini at Kapi'olani Park Bandstand. 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. July 29. CONCERT: Aug. 1

Growl and howl intelligent, rich prose against the backdrop of a driving beat, and you've got the trademark sound of punk poet Patti Smith, who is bringing her show to World Cafe. Smith, who in 1975 thrashed her way into the musical and social consciousness with "Horses," her first album, has since come full circle, returning to her original firepower with her eighth album, "Gung Ho," last year. Doors open 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show on Aug. 1. All ages welcome. $20 general admission. More than 50 harmonica players from three bands will offer a concert of nostalgic tunes at Tenney Theatre, St. Andrew's Cathedral. The groups, with members 50 to 86 years old, are Honbushin Harmonica Band from Mililani's Honbushin International Center, Ichigo Harmonica Band from Tendai Mission Hawaii and Small World Harmonica Band from the Moanalua Community Park Recreation Center. 2-4 p.m. Aug. 4. FARM FAIR: Aug. 3-5, 10-12, 16-19

The annual Hawaii State Farm Fair, left, featuring fresh produce, farm animals, E.K. Fernandez rides, food, agricultural demonstrations and workshops, takes over the Aloha Stadium parking lot Aug. 3-5, 10-12, 16-19.
