Hawai'i Billfish Challenge set for Kona

The Hawai'i Billfish Challenge, part of the World Billfish Series, is Monday-Wednesday in Kona.

The challenge is a qualifying event for the national Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championships in March 2002.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Honokohau Harbor.

HIKING

• Diamond Head story: The Clean Air Team will conduct a hike to Diamond Head each Saturday throughout the year.

Participants should meet at the Honolulu Zoo under the windsock before 9 a.m. The 2.5-mile hike will include geologic and historical facts about the crater.

A $5 donation is requested.


HORSEBACK RIDING

• Parker Ranch offering lessons: Parker Ranch on the Big Island is offering English-style riding lessons and camps at the Waimea Riding Academy. Equestrian Loki Feliciano is the instructor.

A beginner's camps is Aug. 6-10. Intermediate camps are July 16-20 and Aug. 13-17. Tentative dates for advanced camps are July 23-27 and Aug. 20-24.

Cost for the camps is $200 per child and includes instruction and the use of a Waimea Riding Academy horse.

RUNNING

• Events scheduled: The MDA/Jamba Juice 5K Banana Man Chase is July 29 at Ala Moana Park at 7 a.m. For more information, call 548-0588.

The USO-Hawai'i 10K/5K Base Race Series is Aug. 12 at Wheeler Army Airfield. For more information, call 836-3351.

• Wilderness run set: The 19th annual Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Runs are July 28 at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

There will be a marathon, a 10-mile run, a 5-mile run and a 5-mile walk. The 26.2-mile marathon is limited to 225 runners.

FUND-RAISER

• Ducks Unlimited: The state fund-raiser for Ducks Unlimited is Aug. 25 at Lana'i Pines Sporting Clays. There will be a 100 target Lewis Class fun shoot and a raffle. Entry fee, including shells, is $125. For more information, call Lana'i Pines Sporting Clays at (808) 559-4600.


BICYCLING
