Gambling room on Ward robbed
Four robbers raided an illegal gambling room on Ward Avenue yesterday and stole an undetermined amount of money, police said.
According to police, the robbery started about 12:35 a.m. when one of the robbers roughed up a doorman on the ground floor of the gambling room at 350 Ward Ave.
A second doorman tried to lock out the robbers, but they broke through the door using a crowbar. About 20 patrons fled to the back room while the robbers ransacked the office and stole money. The robbers also ransacked the gambling room, turning over furniture, before fleeing. One patron told police one of the robbers had a gun.
Man charged in Makaha stabbing
Police have charged a 21-year-old Wai'anae man in connection with a stabbing that sent a 40-year-old woman to Tripler Army Medical Center in critical condition Monday night.
Police said Jeremy Antonio was charged on Wednesday with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $75,000.
Police accused Antonio of stabbing his ex-girlfriend's mother during an argument at her Makaha residence, then fleeing in his car. The woman has since been upgraded to stable condition, police said.
Police officer died of natural causes
An autopsy showed a 40-year-old Honolulu police officer who was found dead in his Waipi'o Gentry home on May 24 died of natural causes, according to the medical examiner.
Sgt. Kelvin Dow, a 20-year veteran of the police force, died of heart disease, the medical examiner said.
In May, officers went to Dow's home on Mele Place because he didn't show up for work. They found his body on the floor of the master bedroom after a neighbor let them in, police said.
Dow was arrested while off-duty May 17 on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after his car rammed another car stopped at a traffic light on Kamehameha Highway and Waipi'o Uka Street.
Wahiawa carjack suspects arrested
Police have arrested two men in connection with a carjacking Tuesday in Wahiawa.
Police said the men were stopped Thursday inside the stolen car on 'ñhai Street and arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
The owner of the car told police that two men asked him for a ride at the Wahiawa Medical Building. On Mala Street, one of the robbers threw the man from the car and the two robbers drove away, police said. The man was treated for minor injuries at Wahiawa General Hospital and released.
Murder suspect turns himself in
Big Island police Thursday arrested a 24-year-old suspect in the death of Alden Pauline, who died at the Kona Community Hospital after being found unconscious in a public park on Sunday.
According to police, the man, who turned himself in, was identified as Anthony Eagle, also known as Anthony Mutair, of Kailua, Kona.
Kona detectives arrested Eagle at 4:10 p.m. on suspicion of second-degree murder. Later, after conferring with the prosecutor's office, police released him pending further investigation and possible grand jury action.
Preliminary autopsy results Tuesday indicated that Pauline, 46, was beaten to death.
Police investigate Big Island death
Big Island police are investigating the death of a 47-year-old man Monday after a fight in Waimea, South Kohala.
Police said Harold Estes died at 6:33 p.m. at the North Community Hospital after a fight with a 48-year-old man.
Police responded to an 8 p.m. call Sunday and found that Estes was involved in a domestic dispute when the other man intervened. The two men got into a fistfight.
While police were investigating the incident, Estes began to have trouble breathing, and fire rescue personnel were called.
Estes was taken to the North Community Hospital, where he slipped into a coma and died the following evening.
Seven arrested in Puna drug search
Police arrested seven people during a drug search Wednesday at a home in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision of Puna.
Police confiscated 14.7 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," nine marijuana plants about 2 feet tall, 3.6 grams of dried marijuana, 26 1/2 tablets of Schedule 3 and 4 drugs, and various drug paraphernalia.
They also seized a 1989 Ford Ranger truck valued at $5,000 and a 1989 Nissan sedan valued at $4,000 for possible forfeiture. In addition, they seized a counterfeit $20 bill. The seven were released pending further investigation.
