Kim captures Pua Melia golf title

Bev Kim shot a 1-over-par 74 yesterday to win the 25th annual Pua Melia Invitational Golf Tournament at Olomana Golf Course.

Kim shot a 76 in the first round for a 150 total.

Shayna Miyajima finished two shots back after a 79 yesterday. Kathy Tsukada was third after shooting an 81 (155).

Sanae Vierra, a 10-handicapper, had a 138 total for low net honors.


FOOTBALL

• Vying for first: The Hawaiian Warriors and Kihei Heat will play for first place in a Hawai'i Football League game at 6 p.m. today at Campbell High School field.

The Warriors and Heat are tied at 4-1 in the league standings.

Admission is $7.


TENNIS

• Jobe runner-up: Two-time Hawai'i high school tennis champion Ikaika Jobe finished second in singles and doubles yesterday in the St. Louis (Mo.) Junior Championships.

Jobe, the No. 2 seed, lost to No. 1 seed Lance Vodicka of Florrissant, Mo., 7-6, 6-2 in singles. He and Vodicka, who will be teammates next season at Saint Louis University, lost the doubles final, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.

Jobe will play in the Kailua Men's Night Double Tournament later this month.


OFFICIALS

• OIA recruiting: The OIA Football Officials Association is looking for new officials for the upcoming season.

Training begins next week, and new officials will be accepted until Aug. 1.

Rules and mechanics training will be provided for varsity and junior varsity games. Experience is not required.

The OIA plays games on Fridays and Saturdays in the fall through the state championship game on Nov. 30. Youth league games are also available.

CAMPS

• UH men's camp deadline: The deadline for the Hawai'i Men's Volleyball Camp for Youth and Adults is Wednesday.

The camps are July 23-27. The youth camp, open to boys and girls fourth grade through 2001 graduates, is from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and the adult camp is from 6-9 p.m. daily at the University of Hawai'i.

The camp's staff includes UH men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton, assistants Tino Reyes and Aaron Wilton and current and former UH players.

Cost is $130 per camper.
