Five babies were named the healthiest of them all at Meadow Gold Dairies' 48th annual Healthy Baby Contest, held July 7-8 at Ward Warehouse. The winners are:
  • First place: Miki Estuko Kobayashi of Mililani, born on March 30, 1999, to Matt and Hiroko Kobayashi.
  • Second place: Victoria Chambers of Honolulu, born on July 29, 1999, to Jordan and Mary Chambers.
  • Third place: Nalani Ashlee Story of Kailua, born on Sept. 25, 1999, to Richard and Raeko Story.
  • Fourth place: Bradley Nakamura of Mililani, born Feb. 28, 1999, to Roy Nakamura Jr. and Cesceli Nakamura.
  • Fifth place: Kaira Emmalia Kaaihue of Kane'ohe, born Dec. 15, 1999, to Jonathan and Kehau Kaaihue.

Judges of the event, which was coordinated by the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, narrowed the competition down from 350 babies at the preliminary round on July 7, to 50 finalists for the final round on July 8.

Babies were judged on appearance, health and personality. Major prizes for the five winners were provided by Meadow Gold Dairies, and included $2,500, $1,500, $1,000, $750 and $500 U.S. savings bonds for the first- through fifth-place winners, respectively.

The Meadow Gold Dairies' Healthy Baby Contest began in 1953 and is meant to raise public awareness of the well-being of Hawai'i's children by recognizing those who possess the attributes of healthy babies.
