Hawai'i's beach duo spike into semifinals

Fifth-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of Honolulu upset teams from Argentina and Brazil yesterday to advance to the final four of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) $180,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball Tour event at Lignano, Italy.

Metzger and Wong, both Punahou School graduates, will play fourth-seeded Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina in today's semifinals.

Today's second semifinal will be an All-Brazilian matchup as top-seeds Tande Ramos and Emanuel Rego take on 14th-seeded Jose Loiola and Ricardo Santos.

Yesterday, Metzger and Wong upset Baracetti and Conde (21-18, 21-14).

After that match, the duo then came back to beat Ramos and Rego (21-17, 21-19) in 39 minutes.

Today's winning team will share the $27,000 first-place prize.


QUARTERBACK CLUB

• UH's Trapasso: New University of Hawai'i baseball coach Mike Trapasso is the featured speaker at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting at noon at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Joe Tom Jr., Castle High School baseball coach, and swimmer Brett Phillips, who broke a national age-division record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, will also speak.

VOLLEYBALL

• Wahine tickets go on sale: Season tickets for the 2001 University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball season go on sale beginning tomorrow.

The general public may either purchase season tickets at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office or by phone (944-BOWS). The Box Office hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Phone sales operate from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Thereafter, regular hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Ticket prices are: Lower level (single seats only) $155, plus an additional $20 premium seat donation per ticket; upper level (reserved seating) $115; senior citizen (65 and older) $100; students (4 years-high school) and UH students $70.

Individual match tickets go on sale August 27.

The Wahine start their home schedule against Kansas State in the annual Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

Other teams participating in the Classic include UCLA and Michigan.
