Paving work to start on H-1

State Department of Transportation crews will do night paving work beginning today on the H-1 Freeway in the Honolulu-bound direction between the Kunia Interchange and Waikele Stream Bridge.

Two lanes will be closed between 6:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights for paving work. Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time.

Bus route workshops set

The City Department of Transportation plans three community workshops this month to discuss modernizing bus routes in Wahiawa, Mililani, and on the North Shore. The workshops will be held from 7 to 8 p.m.

The Wahiawa workshop will be held July 16 at Wahiawa Recreational Center, 1139 Kilani Ave.

Backhoe kills Kalihi man

A 38-year-old Kalihi man was killed yesterday in Mililani when he was crushed against a wall by a backhoe. Police are classifying the incident as an industrial fatality.

The victim was working near the machine in a residential area of Mililani at about 9 a.m. when the backhoe slipped in the loose dirt and slid into him, pressing him against a concrete retaining wall.

The victim was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m.

Meeting slated on landfill plan

The Department of Environmental Services will hold an open house today from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. to discuss a proposed expansion of the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill.

The public meeting, titled "Waimanalo Gulch: Another 15 Years?" will be held at Kapolei Hale.

Health of the Land, a community organization devoted to protecting the coast, says the proposed expansion is actually a doubling of the landfill space in Waimanalo and poses health and economic threats to nearby communities.

The organization has also objected to holding the meeting at midday on a weekday, making it difficult for many community members to attend.

Kane'ohe work to begin today

The state will do nighttime paving work beginning today on Kamehameha Highway in Kane'ohe from the Kamehameha Highway/Likelike Highway intersection to Luluku Road in the Honolulu-bound direction, and from Koa Kahiko Street to the Kamehameha Highway/Likelike Intersection in the Kahalu'u-bound direction.

During this time, there will be lane closures from Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for resurfacing work.

Beautification plan delayed

A plan for pedestrian-oriented improvements and beautification along Kahekili Highway in Kane'ohe should be finished in February, six months later than previously expected.

The project consultant has submitted two conceptual designs for the state Department of Transportation to review, said spokeswoman Marilyn Kali.

The public may see a proposal as early as this fall, Kali said.

Philip Mowrey, who served on a DOT citizen's committee for the project, said he's not too concerned about the delay and is glad that the state has taken steps to improve the highway.

"I'd much rather have it done right and done later, than just a hit and miss," Mowrey said.

Kali said construction for the project is scheduled to begin in May.

The state is proposing to spend $2.5 million to improve the look of Kahekili Highway from Kulukeoe Street to Ha'iku Road.

Motorcycle crash kills man

A 61-year-old Waim?nalo man died yesterday morning after crashing his 1990 Harley Davidson into a guard rail near the Crouching Lion restaurant.

The man, whom police did not identify, failed to negotiate a curve before striking the rail just before 11:30 a.m. He was taken to Castle Medical Center, where he later died. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
