Outrigger Canoe Club returns to glory

Outrigger, at top, edged Hui Nalu by a half-second to win the prestigious women's senior race at the John D. Kaupiko Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. It was one of 11 race victories for Outrigger, which won the regatta.

Don't count out the Outrigger Canoe Club just yet.

Outrigger sent that message loud and clear by winning the John D. Kaupiko Regatta in convincing fashion yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon. It was the final regular-season regatta in the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

It was Outrigger's first victory of the season.

"In order to win a regatta this year, you need to have almost a perfect regatta," said Outrigger head coach Kehau Kali. "By that, I mean just about every crew you have has to score points and you can't get any (disqualifications)."

Outrigger may not have been perfect yesterday, but it came pretty close. Outrigger won 11 of the 36 races, and amassed an impressive 97 points.

"I'm very surprised at that number," Kali said. "We had been building up to this, but 97 is a lot. I didn't expect that."

Hui Nalu, the host club of the regatta, also had its best showing of the season in placing second with 72 points. Kailua was third with 64 and Lanikai fourth with 50. Keahiakahoe won the A division for smaller clubs with 18 points.

Lanikai, the defending state champion, had won four consecutive regattas prior to yesterday.

"Lanikai fell flat on our faces," veteran paddler Jim Foti said. "I'm not sure why, but we just weren't in it from the beginning."

Instead, Outrigger seized momentum at the start and never relented. Of the 13 youth races held at the beginning of the regatta, Outrigger won six (girls 14, boys 14, girls 15, boys 15, boys 16 and boys 18).

"There were some weeks where Outrigger came in second (overall in the regatta) by a couple points, and I would joke with the kids that they could have made up those points if they won their races," said Ikaika Kincaid, coach of the victorious boys 16 and boys 18 crews. "I think they know now how important they are to the club."

Outrigger also received strong performances by its open men's and women's crews. The men won the freshman and junior races; the women took the coveted senior race.

The Outrigger senior women's crew of Mary Smolenski, Sara Ackerman, Traci Phillips, Patricia Nagatani, Malia Kamisugi and Kisi Haine completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 12 minutes, 51.91 seconds to edge Hui Nalu by a half-second. Haine, who steered the crew, said a strong "fifth quarter" pushed Outrigger ahead.

"If you break it down, there's six quarter-miles," she explained. "Well, we work especially hard during that fifth quarter. It's down-wind, and it's right about the time where you start to get tired, so that's when we push it."

Hui Nalu countered with a solid showing from its open men's crews, including an inspiring victory in the coveted senior race.

The Hui Nalu senior men's crew of Bill Pratt, Wyatt Jones, Steve Kelly, Maui Kjeldsen, Chris Ball and Billy Balding completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 10:43.69 to upset perennial power Lanikai by seven seconds. It was Hui Nalu's second consecutive victory over Lanikai in the senior men's race.

"We had some problems in the beginning of the year," said Ball, who is also the coach of the Hui Nalu men. "But we worked out the kinks and now we seem to have a group of guys who work really well together."

After winning the senior men's race, Hui Nalu was awarded the Kala Kukea Memorial Trophy. Kukea was a legendary waterman and paddler with Hui Nalu before his death in 1996.

"That was a big incentive for us," Ball said. "Kala was like a father for a lot of us."

In the five open men's races, Hui Nalu won two and placed second in the other three.

Overall, Hui Nalu won seven races. Hui Lanakila, which placed fifth overall with 44 points, won six races. Surprisingly, Lanikai won only one race (girls 13).

"I think it's good for us to get a slap in the face, both on the club level and in our (open men's) races," Foti said. "Outrigger and Hui Nalu came here and raised the bar. It's up to us now to step up again."

The OHCRA Championship Regatta is Sunday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

HUI WA'A

• Lokahi dominates: In the absence of its closest rival, the Lokahi Canoe Club dominated the Waikiki Beach Boys Regatta yesterday at Waikiki Beach.

Lokahi scored a season-high 92 points and won 11 of the 36 races to win its fifth regatta of the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a season. Kamehameha was second with 46 points. Kalihi Kai won five races, and took the A division for smaller clubs with 40 points.

Among Lokahi's victories was the women's senior race. Lokahi went undefeated during the regular season in that division, which is considered the top division for females. I Mua won the prestigious men's senior race.

Kane'ohe, winner of three regattas this season and runner-up to Lokahi in four others, declined an invitation to participate in the event. Points earned in yesterday's regatta do not count toward the overall Hui Wa'a standings, so clubs are not penalized for not participating. Three other clubs — Manu O Ke Kai, Koa Kai and Kai Poha — also did not enter.

The Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta is scheduled for Saturday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
