Kolekole race set for Aug. 4

Advertiser Staff

The American Cancer Society is accepting entries for its annual marathon in Leeward O'ahu.

Slated for Aug. 4, the 19th annual Kolekole Pass Half Marathon and Six-Mile Downhill Walk begins at Watts Field on Schofield Barracks, travels through Kolekole Pass in the Wai'anae Mountain range and ends at the Naval Magazine at Lualualei.

The first seven miles of the race, which starts at 6 a.m., are primarily flat with a slight upgrade.

At 7:30 a.m., the downhill participants will be bused to the top of the scenic path at Kolekole Pass, where they will experience three miles of steep downhill, followed by three miles of rolling flats to the finish line.

Participants still on the course at 11 a.m. will be transported to the finish line.

All entrants must be 7 or older. Since the race is on military property usually closed to the public, cameras, strollers and children carried in backpacks are prohibited.

Proceeds benefit Hawai'i cancer patients and provide them with hospital beds, wheelchairs, medical equipment loans, nutritional supplements, wigs and a variety of other services at no cost.

Entry forms are available via fax or mail by calling the American Cancer Society's Central/Leeward Unit at 486-8420.

Once entered, participants can pick up their race numbers and packets, Monday through Friday, July 30 to Aug. 3, at the American Cancer Society's Central/Leeward unit at 98-029 Hekaha St., Unit Six, in 'Aiea.
