Kaka'ako Kitchen adds keiki menu

Kaka'ako Kitchen at Ward Centre has just unveiled a new keiki menu with a $2.95 price tag. "Show Me Shoyu Chicken Plate," "Krunchy Kaka'ako Chickenettes with BBQ Dippin' Sauce," Tilt 'n Twirl Spaghetti with Meat Sauce" and the "PBJam-up Sandwich" are the menu items chef Russell "Uncle Russ" Siu will serve with carrot and celery sticks and olives. Kids will also receive an Uncle Russ characterization to color that becomes a discount coupon for dessert goodies. Kaka'ako Kitchen, across from the new Consolidated Ward 16 Theatre complex, is open 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. 596-7488.

KCC serving dinner in evenings

Kapi'olani Community College students taking their final practicum course in the culinary arts program will be serving dinner in the Ka'Ikena Dining Room, learning all phases of restaurant operations. Dinners are priced from $25.95 to $30 per person. Guest chefs include Lydell Leong, a KCC alumni and executive sous chef at 3660 on the Rise restaurant, on July 31, and Eric Leterc, executive chef of the Pacific Beach Hotel, Aug. 7. Grant Sato, chef instructor at KCC, will oversee the program, with the evening meal presented Tuesdays-Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 5 p.m. through Aug. 16. 734-9488.

'Iron Chef USA' series delayed

"Iron Chef USA," the new American version of the popular "Iron Chef" television program from Japan, will premiere on Nov. 16 rather than Aug. 31 as previously announced. Chef Roy Yamaguchi will be featured as the Asian chef, one of four on the special that will feature a culinary battle against two challengers. Two one-hour specials were recently filmed at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The show will air on KFVE, Channel 5.

Ruth's Chris names new chef

Todd Wells, previously at Ryan's Grill in Ward Centre, has been named executive chef for Ruth's Chris Steak House on Restaurant Row. Originally from Denver, Wells has also been in the kitchens of the Lodge at Ko'ele and Henry Clay's Rotisserie, both on Lana'i, before joining Sunset Grill.

Readers Digest lists key foods

According to Reader's Digest magazine, men and women can help ward off illness by eating five key foods. For men: tomato sauce to prevent prostate cancer; oysters for reproductive health; broccoli to stave off bladder cancer; peanut butter to reduce cholesterol and battle heart disease; and watermelon to reduce blood pressure. For women: papaya helps to prevent gall-bladder disease; flax seed slows tumor growth in breast cancer; tofu can minimize menopausal hot flashes, buffalo meat is a low-fat alternative to iron-rich beef; and collard greens can help prevent bone fractures associated with osteoporosis.
