Local commandments

1. God is numbah one. 2. No make da kine statues. 3. Watch yo mout. No swea wit God's name.

Sound familiar? These are three of "Da Pidgin Ten Commandments." A family hui called Pohai and Friends, consisting of originator Alison Humphries' clan, works together on the writing, printing, artwork, computer design, cutting and painting of all their products featuring a pidgin version of the commandments, which are illustrated with a gecko on a surfboard.

Available at Vue Hawaii, Local to da Max, Handmade from the Heart and several Christian shops are a T-shirt ($12-$22) and plaques ($12-18). Coming soon: a small tile. "It' a great way to get God's commandments into homes, schools and offices," Humphries said.

Doctor in the house

It may not be a best seller yet, but "Embarrassing Medical Problems – Everything You Always Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask Your Doctor" (Hatherleigh Press, $14.95, paperback) certainly gets your attention. Bad breath, baldness, belly button discharge, ears that stick out, belching, twitching eyes and other icky problems are explored in this new book by Dr. Margaret Stearn, who received her training from Oxford University in England. Says the book's press release: "You no longer have to suffer in silence."

Agenda for architects

Honolulu's annual architecture "week" – actually tomorrow through July 28 – is a chance for architects, design professionals and the public to engage in discussions about how Honolulu should look in the future. Contact the American Institute of Architects, Honolulu chapter, 545-4242. Here's the schedule:

  • Tomorrow: Film screening and lecture, "Visioning for the Rebirth of a City," a movie and talk about design changes in Berlin, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Design charette, a two-day workshop involving teams of architects and others in discussions about underdeveloped or changing Hawai'i neighborhoods.
  • July 26: Design awards banquet honoring the best of Hawai'i architectural work in the last year, at the Hawai'i Prince hotel.
  • July 28: Chat with an architect: an opportunity for the public to meet with an architect to learn more about solutions to residential, commercial or community design problems, at Kahala Mall.
