State says bridal shop did not file tax returns

Advertiser Staff

The state announced yesterday that a tax complaint was filed against BIC Bridal Hawaii Inc. for failing to file its annual general excise tax returns.

According to tax director Marie Okamura, BIC Bridal Hawai'i Inc. did not file for the fiscal years ended Aug. 31, 1997 and Aug. 31, 1998. The penalty for failing to file a tax return is a misdemeanor, and if convicted, the corporation will be fined not more than $100,000 for each year.

Okamura said the state encourages taxpayers to voluntarily file tax returns, and if taxpayers voluntarily report their failure to file or other omissions, the Department of Taxation usually will not initiate a criminal investigation.

Kosaki Takuma, an employee of BIC Bridal Hawaii Inc., said the company was not ready to comment.
