Punchbowl resident surprises intruder

Police opened a robbery investigation after a gunman confronted a man in his Punchbowl home Monday.

Police said a resident of Pele Street was awakened at 1:35 a.m. by an armed intruder.

Another resident entered the room and the gunman fled, police said. He was described as 5 feet 10 to 6 feet tall, 165 pounds, wearing a black beanie and sweatpants, police said.

Boyfriend arrested in alleged threats

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of threatening to kill his girlfriend with a construction tool during an argument yesterday in Kailua, police said.

The man picked up a hammer and threatened to kill his girlfriend during a domestic argument, they said. He then attempted to leave as police arrived, and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Girlfriend hit by truck in Wai'anae

A Wai'anae man was arrested on suspicion of assault after he allegedly hit his girlfriend with his truck during a domestic dispute Monday in Wai'anae.

According to police, the girlfriend tried to leave and walked away from the truck, but he put the vehicle in reverse and struck her, causing her to fall to the pavement on Wai'anae Valley Road.

The woman had bruises and swelling of the elbows and left knee. The man fled, but was arrested later on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Father arrested in ramming of car

A 27-year-old man who police said purposely rammed a car with two people inside, including his 4-year-old daughter, was arrested on Monday.

Police said the incident happened when the mother brought the man's 4-year-old daughter for a visit.

The woman, 23, drove away with the child, but the man followed, twice ramming their car near the Kaua Street overpass, police said. When the woman's car stopped, the man reached into her car, grabbed her purse and told her to follow him back to the house. She drove instead to the Kalihi police station.

The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree criminal property damage and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

Jellyfish lingering on Waikiki beach

A lifeguard removed 12 box jellyfish in Waikiki yesterday, and officials said a "jellyfish watch" will remain in effect for a couple more days.

The lifeguard found the jellyfish in an area from the Duke Kahanamoku statue down to the Kuhio Beach groin, said Dennis Sallas of the city's Ocean Safety Division.

"They're still there," Sallas said. "We expect it to slow down in the next day or two."

Box jellyfish normally swim to shore seven to 11 days after a full moon, and stay for as long as five days, officials said. The last full moon was July 5.

Areas commonly affected include the Ala Moana Beach Park swim channel, Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Poka'i Bay and Makaha Surfing Beach. Lifeguards will post warnings where jellyfish are spotted.

Jellyfish stings should be treated by flushing the affected area with vinegar, applying heat pads and, if pain persists, seeking medical attention. Lifeguard stations are equipped to treat stings.

Last month, lifeguards spotted 900 box jellyfish in the Waikiki area, the third-largest box jellyfish influx of the year on O'ahu.
