Maui-Moloka'i ferry expands service

LAHAINA, Maui — Sea Link of Hawai'i Inc. is expanding its Maui-Moloka'i ferry service effective Monday.

A 7:30 a.m. Lahaina departure has been added on Mondays only. With the new service, the Molokai Princess will be making a total of 22 weekly runs between the two islands.

Dave Jung, president of Sea Link, said the ferry is not making money yet, but he is encouraged by slowly increasing passenger counts.

Maui watershed meetings planned

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County and the state Department of Health are sponsoring a series of workshops in Maui County to present publications and ideas developed by a joint watershed project.

Meetings will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Hale Kupuna O Lana'i on Lana'i; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell Pauole Center in Kaunakakai; noon to 4 p.m. July 31 at the Cameron Center in Wailuku; and noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Items to be presented include a manual for erosion control at construction sites, a revision of county drainage rules to address storm water pollution and coastal water quality, and a grading permit procedures booklet.

There also will be discussion of the investigation of complaints about soil erosion, dust nuisance, drainage runoff, illegal dumping and wastewater spills.


Big Island officer wins MADD award

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police officer Robert Hatton has won the annual Law Enforcement Award from the state chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

It is the second year in a row a Hawai'i County officer has received the honor. Last year's winner was Hatton's supervisor, Sgt. Samuel Jelsma.

Jelsma described Hatton as a "dedicated and motivated" officer. "He makes a lot of stops, and there are a lot of drunks out there," Jelsma said.

Hatton alone arrested 104 suspected drunken drivers last year — about 10 percent of the total for the entire police force.


Maui group plans beach cleanup

HO'OKIPA, Maui — The Maui Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is planning a beach cleanup, cookout and concert Saturday at Ho'okipa Beach Park.

The cleanup at the popular north shore surfing and windsurfing spot will run from 8 to 11 a.m., followed by a free cookout and concert from noon to 4 p.m.

Results of survey to be announced

WAILUKU, Maui — Mayor James "Kimo" Apana tomorrow (7-19) will share the results of a telephone survey measuring public satisfaction with county services.

The results will be revealed at a public meeting at 2 p.m. in the Mayor's Lounge on the ninth floor of the Kalana O Maui Building. The survey was conducted in March and April by SMS Consulting in Honolulu at a cost of $25,000. More than 800 households were polled.
